ÄGINA - Im Argo-Saronischen Golf

Ägina ist die zweitgrößte Insel des Argo-Saronischen Golfs, mit dem Schnellboot nur 35 Minuten von Piräus entfernt. Laut der Mythologie wurde die Insel nach der Nymphe Ägina benannt, die Tochter des Flusses Asopos.

Die archäologischen Funde und Überreste in der Gegend von Kolona beweisen, dass die Insel schon in prähistorischer Zeit besiedelt wurde. Aus dem 6 Jh. v. Chr. stammt der Apollotempel, der auf dem Gipfel des Hügels von Kolona steht. Besonders beeindruckend ist ferner der gut erhaltene Tempel von Athena Aphaia im Norden der Insel, der zusammen mit dem Poseidontempel in Sounio und der Akropolis in Athen angeblich das heilige Dreieck der Antike geprägt hat. Besuchenswert ist ebenso der Tempel des Ellanios Zeus auf dem Berg Ellanio, dem höchsten Berg der Insel.

Ägina ist eine Insel vulkanischen Ursprungs mit hügeliger Landschaft, malerischen Buchten, Sandstränden und wunderschönen Kiefernwäldern. Hauptanbauprodukt der Insel sind die berühmten Pistazien aus Ägina, die besonders im nördlichen und nordwestlichen Teil der Insel angebaut werden. In Ägina befindet sich auch das Hellenic Wildlife Hospital, eines der ältesten und größten Zentren zur Rehabilitation von bedrohten Wildtieren in Südeuropa. An der westlichen Küste von Ägina schmücken farbige neoklassische Gebäude, gepflasterte Gassen und byzantinische Kirchen die gleichnamige Hauptstadt der Insel. Hier befinden sich auch das Archäologische Museum von Ägina und der venezianische Turm von Markellos aus dem 17. Jh. Das Gebäude Kyverneion im Stadtzentrum wurde der Sitz der ersten griechischen Regierung nach dem Unabhängigkeitskrieg. Dort wohnte ebenfalls der erste Gouverneur Griechenlands, Ioannis Kapodistrias. Drei Kilometer von der Stadt entfernt liegt das Museum von Christos Kapralos, wo Kunstwerke des großen griechischen Bildhauers Christos Kapralos (Gemälde, Skulpturen, Keramiken und Kupferkunstwerke) ausgestellt werden.
